PDFs often carry sensitive information — contracts, IDs, financial statements — that shouldn't be shared as-is. Password protection stops unauthorized viewing, unlocking removes restrictions from files you own but lost the password for, and redaction permanently removes sensitive text or images before you share a document externally.
Can I unlock a PDF without knowing the password?
This tool can remove owner/permission restrictions on PDFs you have legitimate access to. It cannot bypass a user password (the one required just to open the file) without knowing it — that's by design, not a limitation to work around.
How does PDF redaction work here?
You draw boxes over the areas you want hidden, and the tool re-renders those pages with that content permanently removed — not just visually covered — before rebuilding the PDF.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Unlocking, password-protection, and redaction all run locally in your browser using pdf.js and pdf-lib. Nothing is sent to a server.
What password protection does it add?
You can set an open password (required to view the file) and/or restrict permissions like printing and copying, using standard PDF encryption.
Is this tool free?
Yes — unlocking, protecting, and redacting PDFs are all free, with no sign-up or file limits.
